Mainsoft Announces Visual Studio 2008 Support for Java EE, Linux and UNIX
Customers Run Managed, Unmanaged Windows Code on Open Systems
Milpitas, Calif. - August 25, 2008 - Mainsoft® Corporation, a leading provider of Microsoft®-Java™ EE interoperability software, today announced that the latest releases of its cross-platform development products, including Mainsoft for Java EE, version 2.5, and Mainsoft for UNIX® and Linux®, version 5.2, provide full support for the Visual Studio® 2008 IDE. Ported applications range from a few thousand lines of code that individuals prefer to port rather than rewrite in Java, to enterprise software that is well over a million lines of managed or unmanaged code.
- Mainsoft for Java EE is Mainsoft's Visual Studio-based cross-platform software suite that features a patented .NET-Java cross-compilation engine. The cross compiler allows C# and Visual Basic developers to write ASP.NET AJAX applications, with responsive user interfaces and efficient client-server communications, using ASP.NET 2.0, the AJAX Extensions, and the AJAX Control Toolkit, and run the output, Java bytecode, natively on Java EE platforms. These include IBM WebSphere® Portal, WebSphere Application Server, Lotus Expeditor®, Lotus Notes®, Tomcat, and any standards-compliant Java EE server. Mainsoft for Java EE version 2.5 introduces support for the Visual Studio 2008 IDE as well as the C# 3.0 and Visual Basic 9 language features. Developers can download Grasshopper 2.5, the freely available Developer Edition, at dev.mainsoft.com.
- Mainsoft for UNIX and Linux enables C++ developers to write enterprise-class applications using the Visual Studio 2008 IDE, and deploy them natively on 21 UNIX and Linux platforms. Version 5.2 introduces support for HP-UX 11i v2 and HP-UX 11i v3 on HP Integrity servers with high-performance, high-volume Intel Itanium 64-bit processors, HP-UX 11i v3 on HP 9000 servers with PA-RISC processors, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 for x86_64 and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 for x86. Mainsoft for UNIX and Linux continues to support Sun Solaris 8, 9, and 10 for SPARC®, AMD Opteron, and Intel architectures, as well as AIX 5.3 and 5.2 for the Power architecture.
"Mainsoft has invested more than 150 man years in the development, testing, and performance optimization of our cross-platform product suite," said Yaacov Cohen, president and CEO of Mainsoft. "We estimate there are more than a million IT users using Windows software on the Java EE platform, or on the UNIX or Linux operating systems, thanks to Mainsoft software."
Customer Projects
- ESI Group, a pioneer and world-leading supplier of digital simulation software for prototyping and manufacturing processes, is using Mainsoft for UNIX and Linux (C++) to deploy its virtual prototyping software on multiple UNIX and Linux platforms. "We originally developed the environment (GUI) of our Simulation-Based Design solutions on Windows, using C++ and Microsoft technologies," said Franck Potier, industrialization and porting manager at ESI Group. "We have used Mainsoft for several years now, mostly for the deployment of our products, including Visual Environment, on the different platforms used by our customers. Mainsoft is now completely integrated into our automatic building version's process, enabling daily versions on all targeted operating systems, including Linux 32, Linux 64, HP-UX11, and others. By allowing regular and simultaneous validation, the use of Mainsoft software greatly improves the quality of our validation's process and therefore the quality of our products."
- Christopher Scaffidi, a PhD student in Carnegie Mellon University's School of Computer Science, used Mainsoft software to convert his Topes4 parser-generation suite into Java in less than an hour, in order to collaborate with other researchers that program in Java. "Mainsoft made converting C# to Java incredibly easy," said Scaffidi. "The alternative, rewriting nearly 10,000 lines of code in Java, would have taken several days." Scaffidi's software, available at http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~cscaffid/topes-home.shtml, identifies and corrects common data types, such as phone number and product numbers, and can be used in Excel and other Microsoft- or Java-based applications. Scaffidi is a member of Mainsoft's Grasshopper community, which develops hundreds of cross-platform products each month.
- Mainsoft is using Mainsoft for Java EE and its in-house team of .NET developers to build SharePoint integration software for IBM platforms, including Lotus Notes and WebSphere Portal. Mainsoft intends to release additional SharePoint integration products later this year.
