Description:
Magic Software Enterprises offers highly productive, state-of-the-art
development technology, customizable applications, and services for
cost-effectively solving business problems. Using Magic's products, companies
can efficiently leverage their existing resources and take advantage of
cost-effective technologies, such as Linux®
and Enterprise Applications Integration.
Business problems:
Magic Software needed a Linux version of its award-winning Magic Enterprise
Edition development environment within three months in order to meet high
market demand and avoid missing the market window.
Solution:
The solution was to deliver a turn-key-porting-solution of the existing Windows®
version of Magic Enterprise Edition to Linux using Mainsoft's Linux version of
its application porting platform, Mainsoft for UNIX and Linux and Mainsoft
porting consulting services.
Key benefits:
-
By leveraging existing development resources, previously written
Windows source code, and Mainsoft for UNIX and Linux, Mainsoft's
application-porting platform, Magic was able to quickly serve its markets
-
A fully functional Linux version of Magic Enterprise Edition (over
one million lines of C++ code) was brought to market in only three months
-
Development and maintenance costs were reduced by nearly 95
percent because the existing Windows source- code of Magic Enterprise Edition
was leveraged to create a Linux version of the application
-
Porting the Windows source-code to Linux with the Mainsoft for
UNIX and Linux cross-platform development environment allowed the Linux version
to retain full Windows functionality with native UNIX®
performance
Understanding customer needs and delivering a risk-free porting
solution
Mainsoft has always been proud of its reputation for developing close partner
relationships with its customers. Mainsoft porting experts analyzed Magic
source code including test suites and developed within one week a comprehensive
porting plan with weekly milestones and deliverables committing to a 90 days
delivery of Magic Enterprise for Linux.
After 90 days all Magic test suites were running and passing on Linux, the same
way they were passing on Windows!
The Magic story is one example of the kind of close relationship
Mainsoft promotes with all of its customers.
Magic shipped Enterprise Edition for Linux in under 3 months by
using Mainsoft's porting solution
The increasing popularity of the Linux platform created an immediate demand for
Magic to port its award-winning Enterprise Edition to the Linux platform. With
a launch-window of only three months, Magic did not have the resources
necessary to rewrite the more than one million lines of C++ code contained in
Magic Enterprise Edition for the Linux platform.
As a general rule, it takes one engineer approximately one year to write 30,000
lines of native UNIX C/C++ code. At this rate, Magic would have needed more
than 30 engineer years to deliver a fully debugged and QA'd version of its
development environment for Linux. Instead, using Mainsoft for UNIX and Linux,
the entire project was completed in under 3 months.
"Mainsoft's technology was so advanced that we were able to
deliver Enterprise Edition for Linux from start to finish, in less than three
months," said David Leichner, Vice President of Worldwide Marketing at Magic
Software. "Time-to-market was our utmost priority. We relied on Mainsoft's
Windows platform for Linux to help us meet our customer needs. Without Mainsoft
for UNIX and Linux, we may have missed the market opportunity."
Confidence in Mainsoft to deliver on-time and in-budget
Mainsoft for UNIX and Linux is very mature, supporting all the major UNIX
platforms. "We have some of the best cross-platform engineers in the world who
know this technology inside/out. So we were confident that we could help them
deliver a commercial product within their short three-month launch-window,"
said Ron Johnsen, Mainsoft Vice President of Services.
