Mainsoft selected by Microsoft as foundation technology for next generation DCOM on Unix
Sunnyvale, California - September 22, 1998 - Microsoft chose Mainsoft to provide the
Windows foundation for DCOM on Unix. This agreement makes possible unprecedented levels of
integration and interoperability between Windows and Unix.
DCOM is a framework for building robust platform-independent and compiler-independent
reusable software components. DCOM allows applications or software components on different
machines, different platforms, and different locations all to work together seamlessly
across networks and even across the Internet.
Rather than write new code, Microsoft chose to use Mainsofts machine-independent
Windows, MainWin, to redeploy the Microsoft DCOM source code on Unix. MainWin makes it
possible to release identical Windows and Unix versions simultaneously, using a single
source code for both.
Microsoft and Mainsoft have previously worked together on similar agreements. MainWin
was instrumental in the development of Microsofts popular Internet Explorer and
Outlook Express for Unix.
"MainWin is the Windows foundation for Internet Explorer for Unix, Outlook Express
for Unix, and Microsofts DCOM. " said Ivor Share, Mainsofts CEO. "It
is a very persuasive reason to make MainWin the foundation for your mission-critical
server applications."
